Escondido native and golf apparel mogul, John Ashworth began playing with the idea of Linksoul over twenty years ago while building Ashworth, Inc. With a team of golfers, craftsman and artists John, an internationally renowned designer, has built a brand based on the mission of reconnecting people to the soul of the game. Linksoul is more of a philosophy than a brand, it is about working with passionate people who enjoy collaborating together. John's passion for great product design and positive attitudes make him the perfect first member of Comfort Collective.
HOW WERE YOU INTRODUCED TO THE GAME OF GOLF AND DID YOU HAVE A MENTOR THAT GUIDED YOU TO START PLAYING?
I was eight years old and my mom gave me a choice - either go to Sunday School or go and caddie for my dad in his dawn patrol weekly standing game with his buddies. My dad was my guide and main mentor, but both his parents and my grandparents were single digit handicaps and I spent a lot of time with them on the course when I was a kid.
WHEN DID YOU REALIZE THAT GOLF WOULD BECOME YOUR LIVELIHOOD?
I've pretty much done every job in and around a golf course. I've had a couple of jobs outside of the golf world but I didn't like them too much. There's the 'real world' and then there's the 'golf world' and I feel extremely lucky to have carved out a living in the golf world.
DO YOU PREFER TO WALK OR RIDE WHILE PLAYING?
Walk by a mile.
WHAT IS IT ABOUT WALKING THE GOLF COURSE THAT YOU LOVE SO MUCH? Everything!
Textures, colors, smells, sounds, stillness. I could go on.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE, ON AND OFF THE COURSE?
Simple and relaxed.
OFF THE GOLF COURSE, WHAT KEEPS YOU BUSY, ACTIVE, AND INSPIRED?
My family, travel, and work. Lucky for me my work is different every day and is always a creative collaboration of an expression to add value in something to wear or a general thought form.
WHAT WAS IT ABOUT BLUPRINT THAT MOTIVATED YOU TO BECOME AN AMBASSADOR?
I felt the quality of design would be of a superior quality and something that I would be proud to be a part of and to wear in my everyday movements.
WHAT DO YOU CONSIDER YOUR ULTIMATE 'COMFORT ZONE'? WHERE ARE YOU, WHAT ARE YOU WEARING, WHO ARE YOU WITH?
Every day is new and different and I want it to ultimately be comfortable wherever it takes me.
WHAT WAS THE INSPIRATION BEHIND LINKSOUL?
Selfishly really - To make quality clothing that I'd like to wear and to promote the real lifestyle that golf offers, which is one of recreation, exercise and socialization. It is a game of spiritually transformative ingredients that will add to the evolution of one's self, should they be open to it.
HOW DID YOU COME UP WITH THE NAME LINKSOUL?
The definition of 'Links' is the sandy dunes that connects the land to the sea and it's the place where the game of golf was born. The definition of 'Soul' is the spiritual embodiment of a human being. And the other great thing about golf is that it's one of those games where four complete strangers can meet up at a random golf course, get paired up and after 18 holes and four hours of ups and downs, they can form a bond and a friendship that can last the rest of their lives. Golf 'links souls' like no other game I know.
WHAT WERE SOME OF YOUR GREATEST CHALLENGES WITH CREATING LINKSOUL? AND HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THOSE CHALLENGES?
Too many to name .... perseverance, laughter, and grit.
WHAT DOES THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE FOR LINKSOUL?
The future for Linksoul looks bright.
WHAT DO BLUPRINT AND LINKSOUL HAVE IN COMMON?
I think quite a lot...great product design, young and upcoming companies and positive attitudes.
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS/FEATURES DO YOU LOOK FOR IN SHOES?
Comfort, Fit and Style.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO LEAVE BEHIND - YOUR LEGACY?
To make a positive contribution by serving humanity and especially creating a positive difference in the lives of young people through our Leadership and Caddie Academy at Goat Hill Park.
